Hints

Paint finishes vary depending on the room and your desired atmosphere and effect. Usually a velvet finish is recommended for the base colour, particularly when using darker colours.

For a rich, contrasting effect, a pearl or semi-gloss finish can be applied on top of the velvet finish using the overlay technique. For a more subtle finish, the application of a second velvet finish using the same technique will result in an elegant, matte finish.

Colour suggestions

Colour selection is an essential step in creating a beautiful look.

To pull together and enhance your entire look , choose a favourite colour from your furniture, carpet or accessories. To obtain a natural finish, such as marble-like finish, be sure to use colours that are found in nature, for a more realistic effect. Below are suggestions for colour combinations selected from the Harmony Collection:

Helpful Hints

Wrong method Right method

Application: To avoid visible joints between sections, work in irregular areas, not squared off sections that will show a demarcation line.

  • Carefully mask the areas that you do not want glazed, such as ceiling and woodwork.

  • Use easy-to-remove tacking tape and carefully remove it as soon as your work is finished

  • The width of the stripes dictates the perspective you will give to your room. For example, in a small room we recommend narrow vertical stripes to make it look larger. Horizontal stripes produce a deeper effect but give the illusion of a lower ceiling. As always, you can vary the width of your stripes to create your own personal and unique effect.

  • If you need to do some touching up, you should wait until the glaze is completely dry or you may worsen the problem. To soften areas that are too dark, add some of the paint you used for the base colour and rework the texture if necessary.

  • Remember that the last colour applied will be the predominant colour. Also, because opacity is reduced when paint is blended with glaze, you may want to select a tone that is darker than your initial choice in order to compensate for the dilution of colour.

  • If using the colour overlay techniques (with base colour remaining visible through the overlay colour), complementary colours (i.e. green/red, yellow/ purple, orange/blue) are generally inappropriate, as the transparency will cause them to blend, resulting in a muddied brown. Generally, we recommend choosing colours in the same or similar colour families to produce a successful finish.

  • Remember that you will more easily master the final effect of the finish if you overlay thin coats, rather than applying a single dark coat.

  • Beginning at the ceiling, apply your glaze downward to avoid running or dripping.

  • For maximum protection and durability, especially on frequently accessed furniture and objects, apply two coats of ILLUSIO BRÏO varnish available in both Velvet Finish 8565-11 and Gloss Finish 8565-12.

N.B. Be sure to try out your faux-finish technique on a practice board first. This will help you get comfortable with the technique you choose and find the colours and pattern you want. If working on large surfaces, such as walls, use large practice boards for best results.

Colour selection is the essential step in creating a beautiful look. To make this easier for you, refer to the Harmony Collection.
