The Crackling
This simple technique reproduces the effect of the natural aging process of paint, and creates a soft and warm atmosphere. The aged look adds a refined authenticity to furniture and accessories for a sophisticated and unique interior.
Step 1 Preparation
-
If necessary, use TSP to remove grease from surface for better paint adhesion.
-
Patch all holes and remove all peeling paint. New surfaces that have never been previously painted, should be primed with Prime Time Duo Primer sealer/Undercoater 1140-05.
-
For new wood surfaces, use Prime Time Undercoater 1342-05.
Step 2 Base Colour
-
Using a roller, apply ILLUSIO ARTIFICE Pearlescent latex paint #8564-76 Pearlescent "Deep Gold" as a base colour. This is the colour that will appear in the cracks of the crackling finish.
-
During application, be sure to vary the motion in different directions, for example by applying overlapping X's to obtain a natural iridescent effect.
-
Allow to dry 6 to 8 hours.
-
Be sure to test colours, techniques and textures on a practice board first to obtain the desired effect.
Step 3 Crackling
-
Thoroughly blend Crackling mixture and, using a soft bristle brush, spread a thin coat evenly.
-
As soon as Crackling is dry to the touch, which takes at least one hour (and a maximum of 4 hours), apply top coat of velvet finish latex paint, colour #B118-10 "Luminescence", using a long nap roller. This is the colour that will actually crack, so the thicker the coat is, the wider and more visible the crackling will be.
-
Apply brushstrokes in the same direction and with even intensity to ensure even crackle effect throughout. Whenever possible, avoid additional application on previously covered surfaces, as overlay will neutralize the crackle effect of the medium.
-
Allow to dry.
Step 4 Finishing
-
After 7 days, protect the crackle finish by applying two coats of ILLUSIO BRÏO latex velvet finish varnish #8565-11 (also available in gloss finish #8565-12), using a brush.
