The tools used to apply Crackling and the thickness of the coating will directly influence the size of cracks. Also, the thicker the coat is, the wider the cracks will be. Using a brush usually creates long and wide cracks, while roller application will result in a higher number of thinner cracks. As horizontal surfaces allow more even spreading of crackling finish, it is highly recommended that doors and windows be removed so that they can be worked on horizontally, for better effect. If this is impossible, apply thin coats of Crackling and paint to prevent product from dripping down.

Carefully mask the areas that you do not want covered, using easy-to-remove masking tape (for fresh paint) to prevent base colour from peeling off. Remove tape as soon as your work is finished.

Large surfaces (such as walls) require overlapping strokes to hide the edges between sections (even if it is important to avoid additional applications on previously treated surfaces). To reduce the neutralizing effect of overlay, work very quickly, as the quicker you remove the excess left by the edge of your roller, the quicker you stop the product from reacting.

Be sure to try out your faux finish technique on a practice board first. This will help you get comfortable with the technique you have chosen and will also help establish the colours and patterns that work best for your desired effect. For best results when working on large surfaces (such as walls), use large practice boards and place in the room you will be working on, to view test piece the correct lighting.

For maximum protection and durability, especially on frequently touched furniture and objects, apply two coats of ILLUSIO BRÏO varnish available in both Velvet Finish #8565-11 and Gloss Finish #8565-12.
